UPDATE 2008-02-20:Back in 2006, I was actually smaller than I am now. I'm happy to say though, that the weight is now made up of a lot more muscle than fat. I still have some love handles, but at 220lbs, I am stronger and in better shape than I even was at 18 years old. I've taken to doing a little less yoga, but I play hockey, and I'm training in Shao Lin Kenpo Karate with United Studios of Self Defense. Oh, and the mediums were short lived.. my arms don't really fit in them anymore. ;)
UPDATE 2006-06-09:Things have been going well for me. I do yoga, pilates, and resistance training twice a week. I have mostly stopped running. I got up to 7 miles twice, but I started noticing my knees getting sore. I don't want to play that game, so I still run, but never more than 5 miles. I've also started playing hockey again, which I had forgotten how much I absolutely loved. Whats my weight? Well I weighed in at 212lbs. this morning. Still about 20lbs to go. But I'm quite happy.. my pants are down to 34 (from 38), my shirts are all L, not XL. Heck, I can even wear some mediums! WHHHHAaaaattt?! ;-)
UPDATE 2005-08-16:So, things have changed again. My previous weight loss strategy of portion control still works fine, but I found a better way. Just don't eat for a few months, and start Running!. I haven't had as much time to update my webpage, but I've started running regularly. I run at least 2 miles every other day now, and it feels great. I recently ran in the 5K portion of the America's Finest City Half Marathon and 5K.

So, the question on everybody's mind? How much do I weigh now? Well as of this morning I was at 222lbs. That is about 37lbs down from just 4 months ago. Woohoo! I don't plan to stop until about 190lbs, unless I start bulking up or something.

UPDATE 11/20/02: Ok, so after June , when I hit 239, I found it nearly impossible to drop more weight. I dipped down to 234 or so at one point, and got excited. Then I realized the corner of the scale was resting on the rug, causing the numbers to be inaccurate. I moved the scale back and it was actually 241. :(

So anyways, I have decided to give this another shot. My weight jumped up to 248 after some dental problems caused me to need pain killers for a few weeks. This really pissed me off, as it basically erased 30% of my weight loss for the year. With Thanksgiving looming, I need to get back in to the act.

Starting 11/30/02, I'll have my chart updated with the new numbers(it doesn't look very interesting now, 248 ... 247 ... 247 ... ;).

We now return you to your regular scheduled web page......

Ok, so I went to the doctor's office for a minor checkup, and of course, as always they check your weight. Well, I was *shocked* to find out I weighed 270lbs! I mean shocked. This was the most I'd ever measured my weight at. I mean, I'm 5 foot 10 inches tall, I shouldn't weigh 270lbs. It had been bugging me, but this sort of lit a fire under my (big flabby) butt to get back on the semi-healthy track.

So, I went to the store, bought a scale, and started back on a diet I had tried two years previous. It is called "The Hacker Diet". It is available online here. It is an extremely simplistic view, but one that appeals to a geek like me, because it allows me to use technology to track my weight.

From 270 to 246.5lbs
Here is a graph of my results. I will update it periodically.

Now, as you can see, I've had a dramatic drop in my weight. This has been done by, mostly, going hungry, and drinking more water. From "The Hacker Diet", I learned that 1lb. of fat has about 3100 calories in it. So, if I could get a deficit of about 1200 calories per day, I'd be losing weight at about 0.4lbs. per day. With some estimation and careful measuring of my intake, I learned in the first few days of my diet that my body burns about 2700 calories per day. So, I set my target at 1500 calories per day.

This worked well for a while, but you may notice that about March 21, my weight started going up! Well, my body adjusted to the somewhat extreme conditions it was under(1500 calories is not very much), and slowed my metabolism. I counteracted this by upping to 1800 calories per day, and adding 1/2 to 2 hours of physical activity per day. This put me right back on track.

So, who cares? Well, I just wanted to post this stuff up here for all to see. It just takes will power, not gimmicks like eating only fat/protein. Just watch everything that goes into your mouth. Know that there are tons of calories in those french fries and pizza slices.

Oh, and one other thing. Here is the Spreadsheet I use, in OpenOffice/StarOffice format. It still has my numbers in it, so you may need to plug your own in. Also the graph must be manually expanded every once in a while.
