Women are from Apple(tm) and Men are from the local PC shop

(A study on the differences between Men and Women, written in geek speak)

Recently I was speaking with friends and I realized that the differences between men and women can be easily described in the differences between Macs and PC's(As in, Intel based generic PC's). Please offer suggestions if you have any. :)

PC's are all about configuring hardware, but macs make hardware simple

Lets think about it. PC's have IDE drives generally. These things can be a real bear. Plus, we're always trying to build a custom PC from weird parts. Macs just have hard drives in 'em. If you want to upgrade, you hang another one off the port. PC techs are always trying to get hardware into a Mac, but can't quite figure out how, because they don't realize how simple it is. They're just afraid to commit to the Mac hardware platform. Besides, generally Apple wants the Mac to have a service contract. This frightens the PC tech, as he feels he can fix anything that comes along, and really he wants to be able to change systems as soon as the Mac gets old.

Macs use AppleTalk, which is verbose and vague

AppleTalk is the file sharing protocol Macs use by default. Its very verbose, and sometimes quite vague about its intentions. PC's use very simple and terse protocols like telnet, ftp, and SMB/CIFS. These are clear protocols that are predefined and don't include anything unnecessary or illogical. Often times AppleTalk just clogs up the communcation channels with protocol information, while PC protocols generally reserve that distinction for relevant content.

Macs are pretty, but its hard to figure out whats going on inside

Macs have a nice pretty user interface, and they can produce lots of impressive reactions from PC users. But ultimately, its very difficult to figure out whats going on inside a Mac. Sometimes they'll just flake out for a couple of days, even getting hostile. This confounds the PC.

Macs carry a high price tag, and generally need lots of extra bells and whistles to function properly

Macs almost always come as a complete system, so you gotta "take what they got." This means spending lots of extra money on things you might not necessarily need(or want!). Even after the initial purchase, and especially after signing a long term contract, more purchases are required to keep the system current. Otherwise the system may have to be sent back to Apple until more purchases can be made. PCs are built from the ground up, and are much cheaper. Often times PCs are happy just living with the bare essentials, as long as they're fed enough software. One exception to this is, of course, is gameing PCs. These wild machines are constantly spending money to upgrade their looks.
